To keep my feathered friends hydrated all winter, I invested in a heated bird bath. To make it even smarter, I paired it with a Kasa smart plug and set up a routine in SmartThings (see below) to activate only when temperatures dip below 1°C.

For added safety, I placed a rock inside to discourage bathing in freezing weather. I simply top it up with fresh every other day.

Please note that, I do not wash the bird bath when its too cold outside, as I like my fingers and would like to continue using them 🤓

This automation runs through SmartThings, which requires a hub. Currently, Aeotec manufactures the SmartThings Hub, previously made by Samsung. You can also find it here as it’s frequently out of stock on Amazon. I used the most recent version, which includes support for the Matter smart home protocol (this is important)
